Visiting Old Town Coppell, tucked behind a swath of office buildings and warehouses, you almost feel like you’re in a seaside New England town, not the middle of Dallas-Fort Worth. George fits in perfectly; it’s a white clapboard building with a porch out front and patio with picnic tables to the side. It looks more farmhouse than coffee shop.
“We didn’t want to be another coffee shop in a strip mall,” Christian says.

Inside, George is a gorgeous space. It is equally modern and cozy. Its combination of communal tables, high-tops, booths, leather chairs and overstuffed couches makes it an appealing place to sit and stay awhile.
The Hembergers’ philosophy is quality, not quantity. They offer two types of pastries: a cinnamon cream scone ($3) and blueberry muffin ($3). Laura makes them fresh every morning. In the afternoons, she bakes oatmeal raisin ($2.50) and chocolate chip cookies ($2.50).
“Laura cooks our breakfast tacos to order, and they’re made with fresh, whole eggs. They don’t sit in a warming tray all morning,” Christian says. They’re available every day until 10 a.m.

Starting at 11 a.m., you can order one of five boards – burrata ($14), charcuterie ($12), meat and cheese ($12), Mediterranean ($13), and fruit and cheese ($13).
“We want to offer things that can be shared,” Christian says. Or try a Bento box ($7) or chicken salad with crackers ($5.50). Many of ingredients are purchased across the street at the Coppell Farmers Market.

George offers a variety of espresso drinks, including Americanos ($3), cortados ($3.50), macchiatos ($3.25) and affogatos ($4.75). Additionally, choose from eight types of lattes ($4.60 for 12 ounces, $5.50 for 16 ounces). A barista suggested the honey and vanilla latte. It is thick, rich and slightly sweet and arrived with characteristic latte art. With the advent of warmer weather, Christian recommends trying the popular iced lavender latte.
You can also find pour-over coffee, cold-brew, teas, lemonade and Spencer’s Special, a custom hot chocolate creation by the owners’ son.
If you prefer something stouter, George also serves six types of wine ($5 for 5 ounces, $8 for 8 ounces, $20 for a bottle), Peticolas beer ($5 for 12 ounces, $7 for 16 ounces) and Bishop Arts cider.
George rents out two of its spaces, the 200-square-foot library and the 650-square-foot carriage house. Go online to rent the library for $25 an hour, and you’ll get that $25 back in the form of a George gift card.
In opening George, the Hembergers wanted to create a charming, comfortable neighborhood hangout. With their friendly service, beautiful interior and attention to detail, they’ve done just that.
