When it comes to finding an opening act for a touring guitar virtuoso, Dallas guitarist Hunter Hendrickson’s phone number has been at the top of talent buyers’ lists recently. Whether it was John Mayall or Victor Wooten, the young Hendrickson and his band properly shredded the stage before the well-known headliner took their turn at it. Given Oak Cliff’s guitar heritage, it’s fitting Hendrickson will also play the upcoming North Oak Cliff Music Festival.

In the spirit of “getting to know” some of the DOMA-nominated artists, I decided that, sometimes, the honesty and bluntness of a child can be the best way to get inside an artist. Or at least give them a break from nosy guys like me for once. Hendrickson, who’s nominated for Best Blues Act and Best Instrumentalist, displayed his good humor and answered the questions my five-year-old niece Addie said she would ask a rock star if she ever had such a chance.

Can I have your autograph?

Will you please be my friend?
Yes, because good friends are always scarce.

Do you have any new songs?
‘Ya know, I have a lot of new little bits, and a few of them are shaping up pretty nicely.

Can I be onstage with you?
If you can escape the paws of the bouncer, the sure.

How long does it take to sing your song?
I’m not sure when I’ll die.
