Given Street Dogs‘ and my own shared Boston roots, yes, I’ll always have a soft-spot for the punk rock quintet, which is currently on the road–and stopping by the Loft tonight–in support of its new, self-titled album, their overall fifth release since their 2003 debut.

But this band’s more than just another Boston-centric punk outfit. Like the above video for “Final Transmission,” there’s a serious political bent to the band’s songs, many of which center on themes of war and the men who fight the wars on our behalf. As such, there’s a serious affection for this band amongst our armed services. Seriously: Go ahead and read the YouTube comments for this or any of the band’s videos; they’re littered with thankful notes from military vets and just-enlisted soldiers.

Which is saying something: This isn’t just punk that’s angry at the world, but punk rock that has a purpose–and had found an audience.

And, as for any Boston-centric notions, let’s scrap them all right now: As Jesse Hughey noted in his 2008 Q&A with Street Dogs’ Marcus Hollar, the guitarist lives right here in North Texas, calling Pilot Point, the place where he was raised, home once more after a short stint living in New England.

So consider that another reason to check tonight’s show out. Need one more? How about free passes? The Loft’s been kind enough to hook us up with five pairs to the show. Want one of them? Hit the jump to find out how to get them…

Want one of the pairs? Be among the first five people to email me, starting right now, with the words “Dog in the Fight” in the subject line, and you’re in. Good luck!

Update: Contest is over. Congrats to our winners!
