In this week’s paper, my fellow music editor from the Houston Press, Chris Gray, checks in to let Observer readers know a little something something about Woodlands native Hayes Carll, who stops through Dallas tonight with Cary Ann Hearst and Bobby Bare Jr. for a gig at the Granada Theater. And, mostly, Gray has nothing but praise for the rising Texas star:

Hayes Carll is probably the pre-eminent thinking-man’s Texas musician of his generation. He’s rowdy and rockin’ enough to impress the ballcap-clad yee-hawers, but thoughtful and witty enough to impress mentors (and now co-writers) Guy Clark and Ray Wylie Hubbard. Continue reading…

With a new album, KMAG YOYO (& Other American Stories) due out in February, one would think Carll’s star is only on the verge of burning brighter. And, refreshingly, he seems to be taking all the attention in stride. His new album’s title is an abbreviation of the phrase “Kiss my ass
guys, you’re on your own.”

Tonight at the Granada Theater, however, we expect he’ll be joined by many attentive listeners as he headlines a fantastic triple-bill of bubbling under alt-country crooners. And, hey, thanks to the kind folks over at the Granada, you can join them, too — for free, even. The Granada’s been kind enough to pass along two pairs of free passes to tonight’s show for us to hand out to a couple of lucky DC9 readers.

Find out how to win your pair after the jump.

Want the tickets? OK: Just be among the first two people to email me with the words “Kiss my ass guys, you’re on your own” in the subject line, and you’ll score one of the pairs. Good luck!

Update: Contest is over. Congrats to our winners!
