Menkena
9 p.m. on Friday, June 13, at AllGood Cafe
Former NYC punk rocker Jimmy Menkena’s definitely-not punk band (which, yes, features former Observer art director Mike Simmons on the kit) plays ALLGood tonight, and it’s a nice pairing of venue and band. When I caught them at the Double-Wide a few weeks back, they didn’t match the raucous energy of the venue or the bands before them. Here, expect a crowd full of “chill” people looking to “just chill a bit” and take in the heartbreakingly soft (although rock-based) sounds of this act.
New Science Projects, Dust Congress
8 p.m. on Friday, June 13, at J&J’s Pizza in Denton
Dust Congress, fresh of a tour of the south east, finds itself paired with New Science Projects on this bill, built around a celebration of Crocodile, New Science Projects’ brand-new disc. New Science Projects is jangly, slightly rowdy, and, one would imagine, is gonna get the crowd pretty riled up in J&J Pizza’s deli. (We’ll have a review of Crocodile in next week’s paper.)

This second-annual celebration of independent R&B is hosted by actor Malcom Jamal Warner–although you may remember him best as Theo on The Cosby Show–and features appearances from local favorites Jonathan Tyler & The Northern Lights, Pikahsso and Carmen Rodgers. And, according to the site’s front page, Talib Kweli, too, although his Myspace page doesn’t verify as much…
Balmorhea, Mom, Hotel Hotel

Everyone’s favorite Denton-based ambient act, Mom, gets paired with two Austin acts of similar ilk in this all-ambient show.
Lisa Loeb, Kristy Kruger
8 p.m. on Saturday, June 14, at Bend Studio
“You saaaaaaaaaaaay…I talk so all the tiiiiiiime…so?” And our own Ms. Loeb (who recently appeared on Gossip Girl) will be joined by another phenomenal Dallas songstress, Kristy Kruger, who, if anything, was born 50 years too late for her AM radio sound. But it still sticks in my book.
Strange Boys, The Coathangers
8 p.m. on Saturday, June 14, at Club Dada
Austin-based lo-fi garage-rockers get paired with Atlanta’s similarly-styled The Coathangers on this bill, which The Coathangers seem to be calling the Surfin’ USA Tour. It’s a nice paring, and it should be good one, thus rounding out a pretty killer weekend at Dada. —Pete Freedman
