Seems like these days, hirsute hipsters are everywhere.

At 35 Conferette, even, street vendors sold T-shirts sporting the phrase “Keep Denton Beard” beneath a photo that pretty much exactly resembles Good Records manager Chris Penn.

We posted a gallery of beards after that event, but why stop there? The DFW music scene has so much more facial hair love to offer.

So, after much perusal, we’ve picked a few of our favorites amongst the sea of scraggly scenester facial foliage. Points were given for distinctiveness — if you rock the Grizzly Adams look, you better make it your own or you risk being just another bearded indie dude.

Count Lyle (Ghoultown): Lyle began sporting his Carmine Appice ‘stache and soul patch combo long before mustaches became trendy. And we’ve got to hand it to the guy: With his combination of the Sharpie-precise ‘stache, cowboy hat and, uh, skulls, he’s certainly got a look going.

Aaron Gonzalez (Akkolyte, Yells At Eels): There’s a reason why we now refer to the curly, waxed handlebar as the “Gonzalestache.” Noise rocker-cum-jazz impresario Gonzalez is always easily identifiable, even when covered in the body paint and the wild costumes he so often dons onstage.

Chris Penn (Deejay CeePee): There are a ton of guys running around right now with beards that look just like Good Records co-founder Penn’s. But, rest assured, he had his first.

Nathan Allen (Seryn): Huge, red, and hard to miss, the Seryn guitarist’s chin thatch is to beards what those double-decker buses are to British traffic.

Jeff Biehler (Maleveller): Recently, Biehler’s cut his formerly Bieber-fied hair into a safety hawk. Fine by us; we think it goes better with his Lemmy mustache and wicked metal guitar licks anyway.

J. Paul Slavens (KXT, Ten Hands): The  host of the Paul Slavens Show on KXT-91.7 FM is the Santa Claus of Denton’s music scene, a friendly guy with a big white beard who gives us the rare and precious gift of really great radio programming.

Richard Lee Davenport (Whiskey Folk Ramblers): Davenport’s facial hair evolves with his multi-instrumental musicianship, constantly changing in scope and depth, while always present and always noticeable.

Brandon Blue (Sore Losers): Blue and co-hort Vincent Brown now split their time between Dallas and Los Angeles, but his music — and his carefully manicured ‘stache (see above left) — still occupy a special place in the hearts of Dallas hip-hop fans.

Jaime-Paul Falcon (DayBowBow, Dentoneer, 35 Conferette): Listen, if Mavis Staples announces onstage that your beard is awesome — as she did for DayBowWow blogger and 35 Conferette booker Falcon (see above left) — you know you’re onto something.

John Solis (Homegrown Fest, Club Dada, City Tavern): Lots of dudes have black beards. Lots of dudes have meticulously groomed black beards. Lots of dudes accentuate their meticulously groomed black beards by wearing deep V-necks. But few of these dudes’ beards have their own Facebook pages. Somehow, though Solis’ beard, which was most recently seen frantically running about the Homegrown Fest’s behind-the-scenes, does.
