This afternoon, a clear and still day yielded with surprising speed to a small gale with powerful gusts of wind and some rain. Other than the suddenness, the storm was unremarkable, but the weather was apparently responsible for two fatal accidents to day.

Two construction workers were killed at UTD when a crane they were dismantling collapsed as storms blew in. The live webcam trained on the Arts and Technology Building seems seems to have been taken down. Crews had finished the building’s exterior on Thursday and had a “topping off” ceremony, a description of which has also been removed from UTD’s website, though it is still available through the magic of Google.

A dozen or so miles to the south, a 55-year-old father and his 21-year-old son were at White Rock Lake, sitting in the water on separate surfboards at 3:15 p.m. when the weather turned and sent them into the water. The son made it to shore, but the father did not. As of 5 p.m., Dallas Fire-Rescue’s dive team was at the scene.

Updates as they happen.
