My former Dallas Times Herald colleague, Helen Bryant Anders, writes this morning that Jeff Trigger — former managing director at the Adolphus and The Mansion on Turtle Creek, and the man responsible for the Stoneleigh Hotel’s extreme makeover — is about to save the mighty Baker Hotel in Mineral Wells, which has been shuttered since ’72. The 14-story, 450-room giant behemoth west of Fort Worth, once a hot spot for bold-faced names who came for the air conditioning and Crazy Water-soaked spa, opened in ’29 — and was indeed a sibling of namesake T. B. Baker’s downtown Dallas hotel on Commerce and Akard Streets, which was imploded in June 1980.
The city of Mineral Wells bought the hotel for $2.2 from its Arizona owner, Helen writes, and the redo’s expected to cost around $52 million — and the funding will be pieced together by Southlake-based Hunter Chase Private Equity. The redo’s expected to take two years, which gives Trigger plenty of time to expand the rooms, reopen the mineral baths and exorcise the ghosts.
