Harold Simmons spent about $3 million on that Barack Obama attack ad, and Politico.com’s making sure he’s getting his money’s worth. Because moments ago, Ben Smith posted the second missive Obama’s counsel, Robert Bauer, sent to the Department of Justice in which Bauer demands an investigation into the ad — and, this time, Simmons himself. As in: “We further request that the Department of Justice investigate and prosecute Howard Simmons for a knowing and willful violation of the individual aggregate contribution limits.” You’d think a man spends that much money, Obama’s people would get his name right — which Bauer does later in, and all over, the three-page letter, to which Bauer has attached the official Federal Elections Commission docs detailing Simmons’ contribution to the American Issues Project. –Robert Wilonsky
