Jim returned a short while ago from the Poor People’s March. Drenched in sweat, grime, fury, he saw, through our office window, the Calatrava bridge’s center arch now, suddenly, this close to completion. He shrugged, sighed.
Said he hoped that garish monstrosity wouldn’t close the Continental Avenue Bridge between now and Saturday so they could move equipment and construction materials down to the site. That, he said, would be the final straw.
His fist raised, his head bowed, he returned to his desk to bang out his piece.
I didn’t have the heart to tell him, yes, the bridge will be closed for the next four days, on and off. But not during rush hour. Not from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. But, yes, every day. Till 6 p.m. Till Saturday.
