Rumors have started that local favorites, Spooky Folk, are breaking up. Hearts were filled with sadness as the news began to spread across the DFW metroplex, and Kaleo Kaualoku, lead singer, was bombarded with messages of concern.
“No they’re not true,” says Kaualoku. “I am getting married and moving to Denver with my fiancee, but Spooky Folk plans to keep going strong. We are actually using this opportunity to spread our wings, and consider this a stepping stone to becoming a touring band.”
Cue the sighs of relief.
Even though Kaualoku will no longer be residing in Denton with the rest of the band, he remains optimistic about their future. “We are still working on our new album and plan to be finished with it by mid summer,” says Kaualoku. “I will definitely be coming back to play some shows for our new album, and hope to bring the band up to Colorado for a few shows as well.”
Spooky Folk will be hosting a Farewell “for now” Show May 13th at Dan’s Silverleaf, before their beloved lead singer heads off to CO. “It will be one last hoorah,” says Kaualoku. “We will be playing a lot of our old stuff, some of our favorites, and maybe some of our new stuff as well.”
Kaualoku explains that as excited as he is to begin a new chapter in his life, this move is definitely bittersweet for not only him, but for the Spooky Folk bandmates as well. “There is a definite degree of sadness because we are all really good friends; some of my oldest friends live here in town,” says Kaualoku. “However, whatever happens with a band, the friendship never goes away, so I’m not worried about that at all. This is also exciting because we are still trying to take the next step with the band, since we don’t really get out of town very often.”
Kaualoku ensures his fans that Spooky Folk will not be fading away, but growing and moving toward the next big thing in their career. “A message to the fans: It’s been really awesome these past five years, thanks for all your support and it’s been great getting to know a lot of people here in Denton,” says Kaualoku. “All this hype about us breaking up and all the sadness from people has been really flattering, but I am happy to let everyone know that we will still be continuing the Spooky Folk legacy. And who knows, maybe we will move back to Texas one day. Nothing’s set in stone.”
