Way back in May we took a long, hard look at HALFF Associates designer
Francois de Kock’s Belleview Connector, a proposed bridge — and “dramatic icon” — that might one day link Riverfront
Boulevard to Jack Matthews’s South Side of
Lamar. One day. Maybe. Last I looked, which was a while ago, there wasn’t any money for it. But there is a video: Not sure how we missed this, but a couple of months back the HALFFs, as opposed to the HALFF-nots, posted this animated look-see at what could be. As in:
The proposed 660 linear foot double suspension bridge spans the Union Pacific Railroad, linking The Cedars neighborhood with Cedars West including Riverfront Boulevard and the Trinity River corridor. The goal is to provide pedestrian and cycling connectivity across the formerly impassable railroad to future parks, trails, and residential / mixed-use development. An arrival plaza serves as a threshold and viewing platform. The plaza and bridge capture and frame spectacular views of the downtown Dallas skyline and the Trinity River basin.
The bridge design comprises 125-foot and 80-foot high steel arches, each holding in suspension two pedestrian decks curved horizontally in opposite directions. The steel arches lean 15 degrees to the vertical, opposite each other. A 50-foot high spiral ramp provides access to the base of the large steel arch on the southwest side of the bridge. A set of steps parallel to the spiral ramp ensures flexibility of use.
