Greek Fest was a plate-smashing success this weekend. Saturday around noon there was a sizable but fast moving line that ushered people into a courtyard that reeked of savory, delicious lamb. The weather was warm, but there was a stiff breeze and a tent provided some shade for those who wanted it while they ate. The food was, for the most part, delicious.

The gyro stand had the longest line during my entire visit. Volunteers worked in teams, shaving meat from three gyro cookers before they seared it on a flat grill. The sandwiches were good, wrapped in foil and eaten on the go. The Loukomathes volunteers had a sizable line too, and the smell of fried dough and honey in the air was intoxicating.

Next year I do hope they consider roasting whole lambs. The gyro smells nice, but really meatsicles don’t stand a chance compared to whole roasted animals, tricked out with fresh lemon, garlic and rosemary. Ouzo was missing as well, and while the Greek beer FIX was available by the pallet-full, ouza is the quickest way to get a crowd yelling opa.
