To follow up last weekend’s screening of Urgh! A Music War, Texas Theatre is pulling out an even more obscure film, Beyond the Black Rainbow, a Canadian film released in 2010 that’s getting its Texas premiere tonight.
Directed by Panos Cosmatos, the film certainly borrows from the spare ’70s sci-fi dystopia aesthetic, as we follow a young mute girl through a series of white rooms and dark hallways, and the promise of a “new age of enlightenment” probably means a soul-shattering drug-fueled nightmare. Jeremy Schmidt of Vancouver band Black Mountain provides the appropriately ominous electronic soundtrack. But wait, there’s more where that came from…
After the show, Pinkish Black and the Night Game Cult will be the live musical accompaniment. Kyle Cheatham, who performs as Night Game Cult, recently returned from Portland, and while I wasn’t around Denton when he was playing, the lore of a NGC show has still reached my ears. I asked him, via email, what his plans are now that he’s back.
“I’ve been recording a lot with a guy named David Harris (Invenom), and I’m very happy with the work we’ve done. I’m supposed to also be laying down some tracks with Matt Leer (Mandarin, Diamond Age), Jermy Elizabeth Johnson (George Quartz, Telethon) and Brit Robisheaux (MEW). I’m really in love with recording music, and find it’s one of the few things in life that I can do and not feel stressed by doing it. I’m hoping to release a new, full length Night Game Cult album by mid-summer.”
