Just over a week ago we posted news that Katherine Clapner of Dude, Sweet Chocolate and a whole slew of chefs were rallying around Ulysses Galvan as he battled with leukemia. The benefit they held helped raise more than $20,000 as Galvan prepared for a bone marrow transplant, but news broke on Wednesday that Galvan has died.
Galvan was diagnosed five years ago, and did his best to hide his illness from his employer. “He has this macho thing,” Clapner said, describing how Galvan called in orders for the chocolate shop from the hospital. When Glavan’s illness worsened and Clapner found out about his condition, she decided to hold an event to help cover his medical costs.
Now Clapner is working again to raise money to assist Galvan’s family. He left behind a wife and three sons. His 2-year-old son was set to be the donor for an upcoming bone marrow transplant.
