UT-Dallas professor and Nobel Prize-winner Alan MacDiarmid, who died earlier this month
On February 8, we mentioned the passing of 2000 Nobel Prize-winning chemist and University of Texas at Dallas professor Alan G. MacDiarmid, who received a lengthy obit in The New York Times. MacDiarmid was 79 and died at his Philadelphia home, after he fell while rushing to make a plane for his native New Zealand.
Earlier this week, UTD announced plans for a memorial service in honor of the Nobel laureate that will take place March 4 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the McDermott Suite of the Eugene McDermott Library on the UTD campus in Richardson. The event, which will be hosted by UTD President David E. Daniel, is open to the public, and, says the university’s release, “members of MacDiarmid’s family are expected to attend the event, as are political, business and academic leaders from the U.S. and abroad who knew and worked with the noted scientist.”
Once more, I recommend reading MacDiarmid’s brief autobiography, which he wrote upon receiving the Nobel Prize seven years ago. –Robert Wilonsky
