If we were kind, which we seldom are, we’d say the schedule for the University of Texas at Dallas’ Spring Arts Festival was “fluid.” Since we’re not kind, we will tell you that your best bet for enjoying the performances and visual art of more than 700 UTD students and faculty during the April 23 and April 24 event is to show up when you can and be surprised.

Organizers have been overwhelmed with pinning down dance, theater and music students for free concerts and stage shows, but the art part is done. A juried exhibition will be up in the Visual Arts Building, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Friday. Juror Suzanne Weaver, associate curator of contemporary art for the Dallas Museum of Art, selected works from 27 students. Art awards will be presented in a reception and ceremony at 8:15 p.m. The art should be on view during the day on Saturday, but they’re not sure, so we’re not sure.

Also on Friday night, the University Theatre will host Dance Ensembles at 6:30, acting performances at 8 and jazz concerts at 8:30. On Saturday, the Jonsson Performance Hall will host hour-long concerts beginning with the guitar ensemble at 1 p.m., strings and wind instruments at 2 p.m., piano at 3 p.m., beginning vocal students at 4 p.m. and intermediate voice students at 4:30 p.m. Back at University Theatre, the Dance Ensemble performs at 2 p.m. followed by student actors at 3 p.m. Music titles, stage play titles and dance piece names will be another part of the surprise. You may notice that with 700 students participating, even if we knew their names, which we don’t, we wouldn’t have room to print them here.
