Roller derby is a sport that exemplifies sisterhood, athleticism and, perhaps most important, kicking a whole lot of ass. Dallas’ own Assassination City Roller Derby and the historic Texas Theatre are showing the latest roller derby documentary, Derby, Baby! This is far from being the only roller derby documentary out there, but it’s likely the biggest to date, covering teams and leagues from around the globe, rather than focusing on a handful of hometown heroes. As its subtitle, A Story of Love, Addiction, and Rink Rash, suggests, it’s as much an exploration of the brutal sport as it is an introduction for newbies to its infectious nature. Cashing in on the popularity of the recent roller derby flick Whip It, the documentary features narration by Juliette Lewis. The screening takes place at 9:30 p.m. Friday at Texas Theatre, 231 West Jefferson Blvd. Tickets start at $9.25. Call 214-948-1546 or visit thetexastheatre.com for details.
