Johnny Cash had the kind of voice that is oft-imitated but never duplicated, a rich, booming baritone perfectly fitting for a true giant of American music. Sure, Joaquin Phoenix did an admirable job of portraying the country legend in Walk the Line, nailing Cash’s persona and onstage mannerisms, but his singing still fell remarkably short. It’s simply an unattainable goal; the film’s directors should have let the guy lip-sync instead. Shawn Barker, star of The Man in Black Tour: A Tribute to Johnny Cash, is the latest person to attempt such a feat. According to the show’s press release, legendary disc jockey Ray Green claims Barker sounds “more like John than John does.” If you really believe that, I’ve got some oceanfront property in Arizona you might be interested in. However, if Barker’s inevitable failure causes you to go out and buy 10 Johnny Cash records, then the man has done his job. Catch The Man in Black Tour at the Eisemann Center, 2351 Performance Drive in Richardson, at 8 p.m. Friday. Tickets are $35 to $50. Call 972-744-4650 or visit eisemanncenter.com.
