When I was a kid, my family would drive down to Killeen a few times a year to visit my grandparents, and we’d always stop in West, Texas (note the comma), for a kolache or two. West is, after all, the “home of the official kolache of the Texas Legislature,” according to the city’s Web site. West also boasts the title of “Czech Heritage Capital of Texas,” but it’s the town of Ennis that has the honor of hosting the National Polka Festival this weekend for the 41st year in a row. During the three-day celebration of Czech pride, visitors can hear plenty of polka and folk music, watch the Polka Festival Parade, sample Czech food, join in family-friendly activities, enter a horseshoe tournament and much more. Ennis is just 30 miles south of Dallas, and the festivities will take place on the streets of downtown Ennis, as well as in three air-conditioned Czech halls. The downtown parade and street activities are free, but a $7 to $11 daily admission is charged for the indoor entertainment. Oh, and don’t forget to wear your favorite Czech costume (if you happen to have such a thing). For more information, call 972-878-4748 or visit nationalpolkafestival.com.
