When it comes to gingerbread houses, we’ve been slumming it. Last year’s gingerbread house was slapped together on Christmas Eve — we eschewed the recommended allotted time to allow the icing to cement and so things got a little dicey. The result: a gingerbread crack house. Our resident 3-year-old conducted a nuisance abatement operation that resulted in removal of substandard gumdrops and a serious tummy ache. Our efforts would never pass muster in Highland Park, where even the gingerbread houses are status symbols hand-crafted by renowned pastry chefs and exhibited in the toney shops of Highland Park Village, 47 Highland Park Village. You can marvel at these exquisite creations — which will be auctioned off to benefit local children’s charities — during the 2014 Gingerbread Stroll, open daily through Sunday, November 30. Shops including Beretta Gallery, Bistro 31, Carolina Herrera, Celebrity Café & Bakery, Cole Haan, Deno’s of Highland Park, Kiehl’s, Robert Talbott Carmel, Roberta Roller Rabbit, Scoop NYC, Stella McCartney, Trina Turk, Tom Thumb, and the Village Barber Shop will showcase the gingerbread mansions, bungalows and other Christmas-themed pastry creations — and will offer registrations for prizes and giveaways.
