Do you need someone to tell you how to create an eco-friendly landscape? The people selling you a class on it sure think you do. I prefer to go with my gut when it comes to taking care of the planet, rather than clutter my head with information. For example, one time I overfilled my lawn mower and spilled some gas on my lawn. The next week, there was a dead patch in that spot. Eureka! There I was, running an emission-spewing combustion engine when direct application of the gasoline would eliminate the need to mow altogether. Better still, I could replenish the planet’s fossil fuel supplies. So with 10 gallons of gas and a pump sprayer, I eradicated my lawn. Now I don’t water at all and welcome drought. Really, I do, since my lawn becomes a gas-fumed mud pit after the slightest amount of rain. I didn’t need some hippie professor telling me how to “be in harmony with Mother Nature.” But if you want to learn the EarthKind system, Texas Agrilife Extension Service will teach you from 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Saturday at Texas Discovery Gardens in Fair Park for $20 to $30. For registration and info, call 214-428-7476 ext. 23 or visit TexasDiscoveryGardens.org.
