At first I thought for sure that Michael Lee West’s new novel, Mermaids in the Basement, was a 24-years-in-the-making literary adaptation of the screenplay for Splash, which would have been awesome. Then I remembered that Tom Hanks lived in a Manhattan apartment in that movie and probably didn’t have a basement of his own to keep Darryl Hannah in. So then I went for the second logical choice—a retelling of the Cher/Winona Ryder classic Mermaids set in a bunker during nuclear winter. Wrong again. Unfortunately, it’s yet another book about a Southern girl and her eccentric, slightly dysfunctional family (yawn)–expect the film adaptation starring Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock, Ashley Judd or Reese Witherspoon any minute now. You can make your own casting suggestions at 7 p.m. Friday, when West signs her book at Borders Preston/Royal, 10720 Preston Road. Call 214-363-1977.

Fri., Jan. 18, 7 p.m., 2008
