OK, I’m assuming everyone knows the Beaujolais Nouveau ritual. Essentially, France sets aside the third Thursday of November every year to slam down very fresh wine, talk loudly and—later that morning—linger near handy drains.
Usually all of this takes place beginning one minute after midnight on that particular Thursday. In this city, however, you’ve gotta wait just a little longer for the French Chamber’s 25th Dallas Beaujolais Festival, until Friday, damn it.
Billed as the largest event of its kind in this country, the November 21 festival features brand new bottles of Beaujolais, other wines from that region and several Texas vintages, as well. And if that’s not enough, Miss Texas plans to attend, along with Yvan Jayne. Don’t know the name? Think back to bareback riding at the Ft. Worth Stock Show and Rodeo. Also on hand, a fashion show, some jugglers and…my God, this can’t be right…mimes.
The details: $55 per person ($60 at the door); $50 each for parties of four or more; bring at least 25 friends and receive a 25 percent discount. Call 972-241-0111 or register online at www.faccdallas.com. Every ticket holder will receive a commemorative wine glass, which may come in handy should mimes get too close.

A bit early to think about the holidays, after all, it’s still 49 days until the annual December 24 shopping spree. But Johnnie Walker Blue Label promises the ultimate “gifting idea” (their language, not mine) this year: custom engraving on a bottle of Scotch.
Yep, tell your boss (or editor) exactly what you think. They can’t complain, ‘cause the, um, sentiment comes with .750 of Blue Label behind it.
I’ve been told several local retailers will carve the message while you wait, but that list is still pending. In the meantime, call 877-JW-BLUE-LABEL and make sure you have at least $275 in available credit.

It’s not like us to introduce new features or anything. But for those curious few, Hash Over will appear Tuesdays-Thursdays on City of Ate, bringing sometimes useful bits of news, word about upcoming events, new products and that sort of thing.
Other City of Ate regular features include: How ‘Bout Them Knockers, an evaluation of pizza/Chinese/whatever delivery (Mondays). Pairing Off, in which we find the right wine for everyday foods (Wednesdays) Girl Drink Drunk/Hopheads, for a sample of frilly cocktails or manly—so the writer says—brews (Thursdays) Burning Question, our effort to answer food and alcohol-related mysteries (Fridays). –Dave Faries
