Wednesday 7.3 Early Fourth of July Fireworks — This is the south. We’re firebugs who light explosives every chance we get; how Dallas doesn’t exist in a constant state of fiery apocalyptic ruin is beyond me. So yes, the pyrotechnics begin on July 3.
Devil’s Bowl — Probably the greatest night of the year, the Devil’s Bowl annual Fourth of July race and fireworks show combines home-built race cars, cheap beer, freedom fries, Mesquite, and the most dangerous, low-to-the-ground-above-spilled-gasoline explosions you’ve ever witnessed. The man sitting next to me last yer explained why it’s so good: “We’re rednecks,” he said. “We do ‘splosions right.” TRUTH.

Friday 7.5 Fly — Dallas Theater Center’s new Peter Pan musical is getting a lot of buzz, and has been since it was announced last summer. It starts this weekend, be the first to weigh in on all that wonder.
Pronail Princesa Birthday Bash — Better tighten up that nail game, ladies. Pronail Princesa is Vanessa Quilantan‘s acrylic-droppin’ moniker. She writes about the rap musics for the Observer when she isn’t flippin’ sets at Studio 410 and local hip hop shows. She’s having a party and it’ll be off many dozens of chains. Warning: dress code is set as “ALL CAPS.”
Lone Star State Classic Dog Show — Turn it into a scavenger hunt: find the best owner/pet look-alike; the most unnatural appearing breed; or hand out your own award for “scampiest.”
Saturday 7.6 A Band Called Death — The story of Death, a trio of well-mannered black brothers playing protopunk in early ’70s Detroit, is a hopeful one. And a sad one. And a great one. Mostly, it’s just one you should go see. It runs Wednesday July 3 through Sunday, with its producer in attendance for the Wednesday premiere. Stick around on Saturday night for a DJ set by Wanz Dover and a special show by Radioactivity (featuring members of Mind Spiders and Marked Men).
Lakewood Brewery Tours — You’ve been drinking for two days straight, so why not keep the thrill alive with an afternoon at Lakewood Brewery? They’ve got music, food trucks, togetherness and that all-important social glue: Beer.
ColorMob 5k — Running in a Texas summer + people throwing colored shit at you = FUN. (You athletes baffle me.)
Puppies Puppies – Blue — I have no idea what to expect from Puppies Puppies – Blue, the newest, last-minute exhibition from Oliver Francis Gallery, opening on Saturday night. The entire show description, from participating artists to statement is “WOOF! WOOF!” Suspicions float around dogs-as-memes pop culture, refabricated into contemporary weirdness with a few “R. Mutt” jokes tossed in for good measure. (ART LAUGHS!) Better check it out.
Sunday 7.7 Basically Beethoven Festival — Each Sunday in July, you can check out a free classical music concert in the way posh and impeccably engineered Dallas City Performance Hall. DON’T PANIC: THEY SELL BEER.
