$10,000

Hadn’t intended to look at the Dallas Independent School District board’s meeting agendas till next week — damn, summer break went by in a hurry — but Tawnell Hobbs gives us an early warning: Trustee Ron Price would like to rename some schools for President Barack Obama and your newest Supreme Court justice, Sonia Sotomayor. Should come up for a vote in, oh, three weeks. Three long weeks.

See for yourself on the district’s Web site: O.M. Roberts Elementary was supposed to be named for Ray Hunt Sr., but he took a pass per this briefing document. So, instead, Price went with Sotomayor. Meanwhile, the South Dallas campus that will replace the Billy Earl Dade Middle Learning Center would be named for the president; the library, for Michelle Obama. All I can say is: Thank God there’s already a DISD school named for César Chávez.
