Independent Journalism in Dallas Needs You
We need to raise $12,500 by August 9 to support the reporting our community depends on. Reader support keeps us independent and is playing a larger role in funding local journalism and shaping what comes next. If you believe independent local journalism matters, make a contribution today.
If you need to get into festival shape–so that you don’t have any trouble remaining on your feet all day during NX35 and SXSW next month–Sunday’s show at Lola’s Sixth will be a great training session.
Beginning at 1 p.m. with Ginny Mac and closing with Whiskey Folk Ramblers’ midnight set, the all-day affair is studded with some great Fort Worth acts including Eaton Lake Tonics’ Tony Ferraro and Ryan Thomas Becker, Oso Closo, The Cut*Off, Chatterton and more.
The show is a benefit and guitar drive for the Fort Worth Music Co-Op, which offers free after-school guitar lessons to financially disadvantaged children in Fort Worth ISD schools, many of which have cut guitar classes because of budget cuts.
“We’re asking people to give up on their dreams,” jokes Eric Griffey, a Co-Op teacher (and Fort Worth Weekly writer and member of Rivercrest Yacht Club). “Give a kid a chance to learn guitar. You’re never going to learn to play that guitar, so give it to a kid who can’t afford one.”
The program currently has 14 teachers and seven students, with a couple more to start next week and another 20 to begin lessons in mid-March. Currently, teachers only offer acoustic-guitar lessons, but Griffey hopes to expand to include lessons in other instruments. So far, donors, including Kona guitars, have given a dozen acoustic guitars to the program. And dedicated students actually get to keep the instruments.
A $6 donation or donation of a guitar will get you in the door. All money collected goes toward purchasing instruments at price from participating music stores. Full lineup is after the jump.
