For the average person, today is one big sigh of relief.
January 10 is National Quitters Day, which marks the day most people abandon their New Year’s resolutions.
The concept of this day emerged from a 2019 research study done by Strava (basically social media for hyper-athletes). Using over 800 million user-logged activities, they found that 80% of people who set resolutions gave up by this date.
Specifically, it’s the second Friday in January.
Will you step up to support Dallas Observer this year?
We’re aiming to raise $30,000 by December 31, so we can continue covering what matters most to you. If the Dallas Observer matters to you, please take action and contribute today, so when news happens, our reporters can be there.
So, if you threw in the towel today, we’re here to support you. Here’s where to not save money, kick back a drink or three, eat something greasy and get down with your bad self.
Rayo Bar & Lounge
841 Exposition Ave. Rayo was an instant neighborhood hit when it landed in Expo Park. They’re slinging cocktails for less than $15 and food for even less than that. And yet, they still have a Monday – Thursday happy hour from 2 to 6 p.m. The patio is primed for a cig, and you will leave with a few new acquaintances.
Patrick Kennedy’s Irish Pub
1201 Main St. Have you ever been inside an Irish pub before? The beer is flowing and the food selection is a boon to the gluttonous. It’s the perfect place to call it quits because there’s a high chance everyone inside didn’t make a resolution to begin with. It’s been a rough two weeks. Wisconsin cheese curds and something foamy is the answer.
The Grapevine Bar
2213 Butler St.The Grapevine is known as Dallas’ everything bar: everything goes, except doing coke in the bathroom, which a neon sign kindly asks you to refrain from. Otherwise there’s a happy hour every day of the week with cheap drinks and easygoing vibes.
Harwood Arms
2823 McKinnon St.Great minds drink alike at Harwood Arms. They’ll celebrate their fourth birthday on Jan. 16, so everyone’s gearing up to have a pour of their finest whiskeys, eat some British fare and catch the game on one of their seven tellies.
The Old Monk
2847 N. Henderson Ave. & 810 W. Davis St.The Old Monk has one of the best happy hours in Dallas in not one, but two, neighborhoods. Seven bucks for cocktails (get the Jameson Black Barrel old fashioned) on weekdays from 3 to 7 p.m. These are the exact vibes we need on a cold winter day.
Rodeo Bar
1321 Commerce St. Rodeo Bar‘s slogan, “tight jeans and loose morals,” is all the encouragement we need this weekend. The bar has live music every Friday and Saturday from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., plus darts and pool tables in the Back Room.
Armoury D.E.
2714 Elm St.This modern-day Deep Ellum haunt serves three pages of classic and creative cocktails in a macabre and occult atmosphere. Eclectic Hungarian comfort food is whipped up in the kitchen and they say their plates will keep us warm and satiated while we huddle in the icy grip of the polar vortex. We’re there.
Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament
2021 N. Stemmons FreewayWhen we envision our sigh of relief as we’re released from the shackles of resolutions, we’re four beers deep eating rotisserie chicken with our bare hands at Medieval Times. Get yourself a large, overflowing stein and cheer on your brave knight to victory. That’s resolute.
