Stage names are a pretty good invention in general. If you’re born Norma Jean but want to be a glamorous movie star, you dye your hair blond and become Marilyn. If you’re born David McMahon and want to write music and make fun DVDs for kids, you’ve have to get a new moniker…and quick. And, sure, choosing the right stage name can be a challenge, but when it’s kids you want to appeal to, it’s somewhat easier. Step one: Pick a random farm animal. Step two: Make it your last name. Step three: Win an Emmy. At least, that’s how it went when UNT graduate David McMahon became David Chicken, Emmy Award-winning artist and entertainer of young’uns. Take the kiddies to see the Chicken in action at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lakewood Theater, 1825 Abrams Parkway. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at ticketmaster.com.
