The old-style, big-tent circus couldn’t feel more like an antiquated form of entertainment if the venue were powered by steam engine. The Dallas Children’s Theater, in partnership with Lone Star Circus, has found a way to make it look and sound more like the modern spectacle that all circuses should aspire to become. Charivari combines the majesty and daring of a circus show filled with death-defying acts of acrobats and aerialists with the flash and beat of a modern variety music showcase. Starting on Friday and running through January 5, you’ll be able to see all the stunts that laugh in the face of danger as well as clowns juggling and the kind of animal acts that made the circus part of the American performance lexicon. It’s also also themed like a rousing musical variety show that doesn’t feel like you’ve walked into the nightmare of a French performance artist. The show is at Dallas Children’s Theater, located at 5938 Skillman St. Tickets are $46 for adults, $25 for children. Call 214-978-0110 or visit dct.org.

Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays-Sundays. Starts: Dec. 27. Continues through Jan. 5, 2013
