Ask five people what they think of when they hear the word “India” and you are sure to get five drastically different answers–a group of women peddling embroidered silk scarves on a cobblestone street, Hawaiian retirees eating a bhut jolokia chili pepper, maybe even Paul McCartney practicing transcendental meditation with the Maharishi. The saturated history of the country leaves room for dozens of perspectives. Take a peek into the lives and culture of India at The Irving Arts Center’s newest exhibit, Faces of India: Photographs by Hugh Adams. Hugh Adams spent 17 days wandering throughout northern India documenting the lives of the people, their vibrant markets and their sacred traditions. The spirit and attitude transcending the poor living conditions of the cities inspired Adams. While in India, he visited Delhi, India’s second-largest populated city; Jodhpur, known as the Sun City; Udaipur, known as the City of Lakes; Puskhar, where a sacred Hindu lake is located; and Jaipur, ranked on a top 10 list of cities to visit in Asia. The exhibit hangs through August 1. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays.
