Since Silkwood was the first major motion production filmed at The Studios at Las Colinas, the Muller Film and Television Education Foundation is hosting a mixer and special screening tonight. And by mixer they mean the 1983 drama will be playing in the background while you sip a drink, nibble on some hors d’oeuvres and peruse art pieces in the gallery from various painters and photographers, including local high school students.
Surely you remember Silkwood, the five-time Academy Award nominated based on the disturbing yet true story of a metallurgy worker at a plutonium processing plant, Karen Silkwood. Shortly after turning whistle-blower, she was contaminated by toxic chemicals while at work and then died mysteriously en route to meet with a reporter from the New York Times.
With the mystique of toxic contamination and corporate cover-ups hanging high in the air, our official stance here is to approach the wine and cheese trays at your own discretion. Also, it’s “B.Y.O. Biohazard Suit.” So, if you haven’t seen a good Cher movie in years, strap on your oxygen mask and head out. We’re betting a scantly clad, young Kurt Russell in the background is good mixer conversation starter. And the plutonium decontamination shower on the way out is truly refreshing.
The mixer begins at 6:30 p.m. at Building One at the Studios at Las Colinas. Tickets are $10 for non-members, $5 for foundation members. Call 214-649-4017 or visit foundationsite.org for tickets and more information.
