If the closest you’ve come to seeing a Japanese film this year was nostalgically watching Kill Bill: Vol. 1 on DVD one lazy Sunday afternoon, it’s time to shape up. Head to SMU’s McCord Auditorium, 3225 University Blvd., at 6:30 p.m. Friday to see the first of four days of the 2010 Japanese Film Festival. Friday’s pick is Kamikaze Girls (2004), a coming-of-age tale set in rural Japan that focuses on fashion, travel and friendship. The film won honors all over Japan in 2005, including an Award of the Japanese Academy and four Festival Prizes at Yokohama Film Festival. This is a free event, so leave your wallet at home, and all the films have English subtitles, so toss out that Japanese-English dictionary as well. One film will be shown at 6:30 p.m. each day of the festival, which includes this Friday, this Saturday, Friday, March 26 and Saturday, March 27. All of this year’s films explore the darker side of contemporary Japanese culture, so don’t bank on soft and fluffy. For more information, visit people.smu.edu/japanclub and click on “Film Festival.”
