Someone (who was that?) once said “a picture is worth a thousand words.” If still pictures happen at 24 frames-per-second in movies…well, you do the math. The Museum of Modern Art in New York gets it. With more than 21,000 titles in their film collection, MoMA began Still Moving, a weekly presentation of classic films in all their 35mm restored/preserved glory. And now North Texas gets to share in the cinematic wealth. Still Moving: Classic Films From MoMA brings films straight from that coveted collection to the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth for eight glorious days. On Sunday catch Cary Grant as a newspaper editor trying to win back his ex-wife/badass reporter, played by 1940s babe Rosalind Russell, in His Girl Friday. The Howard Hawkes film, which was tagged “outrageously racy,” in its time, screens at 2 p.m. I highly recommend sticking around for the 4 p.m. screening of Brute Force, directed by the legendary Jules Dassin (Rififi, anyone?). This violent but visually captivating film noir tells the story of a corrupt prison at which a sadistic guard (played viciously by Hume Cronyn) and maddened inmates, led by Burt Lancaster’s inspiring portrayal of the desperate Joe Collins, come to devastating blows.
