As most Texans are well aware, our state’s image and history is rife with cultural intrigue and mystery. From the grizzled cowboy to Charles Whitman, there is no shortage of exotic motifs in the Lone Star state, and since 1996 California native Gary Sweeney has utilized our eccentric history to its fullest extent. Fresh off a recent retrospective of his 40 year career at the Blue Star Contemporary in San Antonio, his latest solo exhibition Problem Child hits the walls of Red Arrow Contemporary (1130 Dragon St.) Sep 6. Sweeney’s work evokes a sense of nostalgic irony with subversive imagery and a ‘50s inspired aesthetic. His imagery is accompanied by some less than obvious humor, which attempts to parley the relationship between the human experience and our cultural make-up. The reception goes from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday and the exhibit will run through Oct. 6. So even if it takes a second for Sweeney’s wit to sink in, you’ll have plenty of time to ponder the punch-line.
Mondays-Fridays, 10:30 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sat., Sept. 6, 6 p.m.; Sat., Sept. 13, 12-5 p.m. Starts: Sept. 1. Continues through Oct. 5, 2014
