Along with all of the excesses of the Super Bowl–including but not limited to: parties with P.Diddy; sightings of Fergie, high-end liquor sponsorships and party passes that cost more than a month’s groceries but don’t guarantee an actual view of any football action–it’s nice to know that there are some do-gooders out there who see the event as an opportunity for something more. This year, the Super Bowl Host Committee has taken on the largest community service project ever by such a committee in order to encourage service learning among youth. SLANT 45 (Service Learning Adventures in North Texas) brought together children from across the region to participate in 45,000 service learning hours in activities from neighborhood beautification to addressing hard social issues. And while you’ll no doubt see the product of the Super Bowl Host Committee’s main efforts along with a zillion other people on national TV, you’ll also have the opportunity to see this less celebrated effort as well.SLANT 45: The Movie features scores of kiddos eschewing the bright lights and glamour of the Super Bowl experience to lend a helping hand to their community. Far more heart-warming than any of the action you’re likely to see on-field, the film screens at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, 3200 Darnell, at noon and 2 p.m. Admission is free.
