As some of us from the Observer learned a couple weeks ago in the 24 Hour Video Race, making a short film is not as easy as it sounds. While we were thrilled just to have some semblance of a plot and a few jokes about balls that made us laugh in our sleep-deprived, punch-drunk state, Chicago filmmaker Melika Bass’ work is described as “curiously beautiful” and “stunningly crafted.” (We clearly need to keep at it to garner any critique that is nearly that kind.) Shoals, a 52-minute piece about three women controlled by a cult leader in a rural sanitarium, and Waking Things, a 34-minute piece about a mysterious family preparing a feast for visitors, featuring members of Chi-town performance troupe Every House Has A Door, will screen at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Waverly House, 301 N. Waverly Drive, as part of the Contemplative Cinema series. Following the screenings will be a question and answer session with Bass conducted via Skype. Suggested donation is $5.
