Weekend after weekend, the cars pile up on the service roads that lead to NorthPark Center and I wonder why. Why do we load the kids into the car, circle the lots and curse at predatory parkers only to enter a noisy, crowded space and then fork over our hard-earned cash? There’s nothing interesting about The Gap (except the markup); there’s nothing fun about waiting in line for 15 minutes for a fountain drink; you gain nothing from a trip to Urban Outfitters but a headache and an utter disdain for overpriced scarves. Go to the mall only when you absolutely have to, and spend your weekends doing something different. And interesting. And fun. Like the Dallas Art Dealers Association Spring Gallery Walk, which happens from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m Saturday. This annual event lets you loose on the streets of Dallas to visit 40 member galleries at your own pace. Artists will be interested in panels held at CentralTrak, 800 Exposition Ave., from 10:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. And if you really have to indulge in some shopping, stop off at the McKinney Avenue Contemporary, 3120 McKinney Ave., for the Artist’s Market from 12 p.m. until 3p.m., featuring handcrafted works from local artists. Visit dallasartdealers.org for other participating galleries and to buy tickets for panel discussions.
