Every time I go to the circus I think, “Damn, this dancing elephant would be a lot more entertaining if someone was playing some top-40 hip-hop and rowdy gentlemen were throwing dollar bills at the pachyderm.” Meeting me halfway is the UniverSoul Circus, an Atlanta-based all-minority circus that adds a healthy dose of urban flavor to the typical circus experience. Currently led by Ringmaster Tony Tone (probable middle name: Toni) and Onionhead the Clown, who entertains audiences with characters like “Clown Playa” and “Clown from da Hood,” UniverSoul also features Chinese trapeze artists, Gabonese acrobats and Ethiopian jugglers. The UniverSoul Circus pitches its Big Top at Southwest Center Mall, 3662 W. Camp Wisdom Road, Tuesday through August 6. Tickets are $10 to $35. Visit ticketmaster.com for tickets and showtimes.
Tue., Aug. 1, 7:30 p.m.; Aug. 2-4, 10:30 a.m. & 7:30 p.m.; Sat., Aug. 5, 12, 4:30 & 8 p.m.; Sun., Aug. 6, 1, 4 & 7 p.m.
