The older we get, the more we’re expected to act like grown-ups. That isn’t the case at the State Fair of Texas. Nope, it’s the perfect place to regress. Blow your cash on fried things! Look at butter sculptures! Make out in the Midway! Big Tex has a strict No Judgies policy. Of course, there’s other stuff happening around town too. Buck Angel Dinner — Buck Angel is a source of inspiration for many. Confliction regarding his gender identity (he’s a man, but was born a biological woman) caused him to spiral into drug and alcohol abuse, and eventually lose everything. Then he took control and turned it all around. Learn how at Dish on Thursday night, when Angel hosts a meet-and-greet.
Dallas VideoFest
In honor of its 25th anniversary the Dallas VideoFest will occupy the DMA all weekend long. You’ll see video art, experimental work, documentaries, narrative pieces and all of those other impossible-to-find things that organizer Bart Weiss somehow locates for you. It’s a must-do.
La Jetée and 12 Monkeys at Texas Theatre — Chris Marker flipped things around with that narrated collection of still images, La Jetée. It’s since inspired loads of other films — either directly or indirectly, including 12 Monkeys. Texas Theatre is showing them back-to-back.

THE STATE FAIR OF TEXAS!!! — I’m sorry I yelled. I get overly excited when I think about the Fair. Have you seen those acid trip silk sculptures at the Chinese Lantern Festival? Did you know Frito Lay is building the largest Frito pie on Earth this Monday? Plus, you can bear hug Big Tex. The Fair opens on Friday and it’s here for a month, so go out and play.
McKinney Oktoberfest — It’s three days of schnitzel-y drunkenness, and an excuse to show off your favorite stein.
Party Mouth — Ochre House’s newest show closes on Saturday night, so if you haven’t gotten over there make a reservation NOW. Twisted and delightful, Party Mouth shakes up the theatrical bong water, telling the story of two roommates hitting rock bottom. Don’t worry, they’re having a blast getting there.

Lone Star Beards’ Inaugural Beard and Mustache Competition! — Y’all better just slip this into your Saturday night, folks. Our local gang of well-groomed Sasquatches, Lone Star Beards, takes things to the next level at Texas Theatre. With loads of categories to attract any niche whisker-landscaper, it’s a beard gazers’ paradise. There will also be a free screening of Beardo after the contest.
Stick ’em Up, Slap ’em Down — This sticker art show and sale happens at Strangeways. So does blackout drinking if you consume too many of those Everclear-based apple pie drinks they’re serving up. Not that I’d know…
Walk A Mile In Her Shoes — This walk against sexual violence encourages men to hike a mile in heels. Attention ladies: Any guy who’s willing to go to such lengths to stand up for women’s rights is worth dating.

Bishop Arts Walking and Eating Tour — Uh, yeah? Of COURSE I want to sample food and drinks from Bolsa Mercado, Dude Sweet Chocolate and other rad spots around that Oak Cliff neighborhood. Sign me up.
Greek Food Festival — Somebody please feed me gyros until I pass out. Then, wake me up by snapping dolmas under my nose. That basically describes my perfect day.
