The Art of Playfulness

Bradly Brown is a founding member of Homecoming!Committee, that art collective out of Fort Worth that’s held our attention with their avid puzzle-making, solving and smashing. When he isn’t co-organizing aesthetic cage matches and serving as a local sculpture freedom fighter, Brown is an MFA candidate at TCU. We saw his own work pop up, quite literally, at an upstairs 500X room late last year in a show titled Mercury Retrograde. There, three industrial fans faced the ceiling, each supporting its own colorful levitating beach ball. It’s a childhood trick we all tinkered with, but Brown cleverly cultivated that familiarity and re-appropriated the idea as a lively, conceptual sculpture. Then, in the corner of the room, an air dancer sparked to life. Yes, there’s a playfulness in his creations, and that’s by design. Brown’s underlying humor airs out the conversation, allowing dialogue to run freely across a sphere of levels. His thesis MFA show, For a Limited Time Only, opens Monday evening.
