New cookbooks are OK, but there’s no beating a vintage recipe collection. The best thing I inherited from my step-grandpa was an Italian cookbook that dated to before I was born, before Weight Watchers and PETA ruined everthing. There is–no shit–a recipe for whale steak, and a “Light Meals” section that includes recipes for deep-fried veggies and prosciutto sandwiches. But if you can’t find an old cookbook, Jack Bishop discusses and signs Cook’s Illustrated Country Cookbook and The America’s Test Kitchen Family Baking Book at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Barnes and Noble, 7700 W. Northwest Highway. Call 214-739-1124.

Will you step up to support Dallas Observer this year?
At the Dallas Observer, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $14,500 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $30,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of the Dallas Observer, now’s the time to give back.
