While Frankie and Annette were teaching American movie audiences the art of riding waves without messing up their hair, a handful of French filmmakers were busy starting a movement that would change the tide of the film industry completely. The French New Wave brought us Francois Truffaut, Alain Resnais and Jean Luc Godard and showed us that making movies was an art form and should be treated as such. The Lone Star Film Society is celebrating the 50th anniversary of this big-screen revolution at the Modern in Fort Worth (3200 Darnell St.) with “Catch the Wave,” a film festival presenting some of the greatest masterpieces to come from La Nouvelle Vague. Sunday, catch Robert Bresson’s captivating tour de force, Pickpocket. It’s arguably the most important film from a director who undoubtedly influenced some of your favorite movies. Skip the beach party this weekend and see why everything is a little bit sexier when you say it in French. Tickets are $8.50, $6.50 for Modern members and Lone Star Film Society members.
