Before those fancy first-class seats on American Airlines were ever created, transportation pretty much sucked. You had your wagons, boats and, well, hot air balloons. You see, hot air balloons haven’t always been just a cool thing to see or a ridiculously expensive way to spend a romantic evening with someone; apparently they were actually pretty important back in the day. That’s right; people actually depended on giant balloons to float them around from place to place. With cooler weather just around the corner, it’s time to celebrate these beautiful balloons at the 23rd Annual Highland Village Lions Club Balloon Festival and Fair. For three days, everyone is invited to enjoy carnival rides, live bands and, of course, hot air balloons. Kids are also invited to jump around in the bounce house and participate in arts and crafts sessions. The festival lasts from 5 to 10:30 p.m. Friday, 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and 6 a.m. to noon Sunday at Copperas Branch Park, 3099 N. Stemmons Freeway. Admission is free and parking is available for a $5 donation. For more information, visit hvballoonfest.com.
