So, the deal with Maid-Rite is it’s really old (85ish) and their meat is loose. And apparently the funny naming homophones are simply attributed to the original founder’s inability to spell — not that I’m throwing stones, seeing how my own house is kind of glassy there.
Maid-Rite is a Midwestern staple based in Iowa. The new location that just opened in Arlington at 4101 West Green Oaks, just north of Interstate 20, is their only Texas location, however not their first. Looks like there was another location in Arlington that closed a couple of years ago.
Regardless, Maid-Rite is another example of people going bonkers about something they grew up with following them to their new town. Locals don’t really get it. And that’s fair. I say this thinking about three Dairy Queens set to open in New York City this year. I can just envision a displaced small-town Texas girl riding the 7th Avenue Express to Brooklyn yapping about, “Oh my gawd, y’all, Dairy Queen is the best.”
Yankees are going to give it a big, fat “Meh.”

This homer passion is what explains the crying incident with In-and-Out, and most surely explains why people camped out at this new Maid-Rite on Friday night to be the first customers. Surely.
The belle of the ball here is The Original Maid-Rite burger, which consists of seasoned loose meat over pickles, onions, ketchup and mustard, served on a fresh steamed bun (white or wheat). They take this basic and jazz it up for several variations.
They also have salads, wraps, hot dogs, and about a dozen different kinds of sandwiches. For sides they offer fries, fresh-made chips (yummy), coleslaw, sweet potato fries, and the like.
Maid-Rite is set up like a ’50s diner, complete with counter seating and sundaes served in traditional tall soda fountain glassware. The ice cream is soft serve.
See? He really was just a bad speller.
I feel like I need to explain this. It’s a Maid-Rite beef sundae. I wanted to order something unique and different. That I did. It’s three scoops of mashed potatoes topped with brown gravy, loose beef, cheese, onions and tomatoes. Well, that’s all I can explain really. I haven’t got my head around it yet. …
