For Elvis Presley, imitation may be the sincerest form of battery. It’s well-nigh impossible to take the poor man seriously with so many goofballs running around in jewel-encrusted jumpsuits and aviator glasses, marrying people in Vegas and gigging office parties. Then again, the real Elvis did decorate Graceland with porcelain monkey lamps and shag carpet on the ceiling, so maybe this tackiness is appropriate after all. Regardless, if you love Elvis–and Lord knows some of you do–then head over to the Hard Rock Café (a suggestion I rarely make) for a rhinestone-studded 69th birthday shindig. The good times kick off at 7:30 p.m. with–what else?–a Beatles tribute band, but at 8 p.m., it’s a contest of Kings when local impersonators vie for a $500 prize. (Registration begins at 6 o’clock, rock.) At 10 p.m., accept no imitations…besides King impersonator Dave Tapley, that is, who will put some more nails in the coffin with his “Cavalcade of Stars,” sure to get your blue suede shoes a-tappin’ and your hound dogs a-barkin’. The King is dead! Long live the King impersonators!
