I’d pretty much gotten over Phantom Planet’s cute-guy L.A. indie-rock when Fox started showing these teasers for the second season of The O.C. with the band’s “California” as the soundtrack. That made me remember what a good tune “California,” off 2002’s The Guest, is, and that the people who made the movie Orange County also used it, and that that must make the people behind The O.C. the most unimaginative people in Hollywood, unless you count the people behind Alien vs. Predator. When Phantom Planet re-released The Guest last year, they included a version of “California” mixed by Tchad Blake, whose producing partner is Mitchell Froom, whose daughter Charlotte plays in cute-girl L.A. indie-rock openers the Like.
