I was alerted to this story by our friends at Houston Press, since I’m apparently not on the Cracker Barrel press list, and maybe this is old news, but the South’s most ubiquitous chain restaurant is selling music. I know Cracker Barrel is the butt of a lot of jokes, but I genuinely like the place. Maybe it’s because I’m a sucker for people-watching, and the transience of CB intrigues me.
But now, after you finish burping up chicken fried steak, you can purchase an exclusive Dolly Parton live album, the new album from Houston’s Jason Michael Carroll, an artist who was apparently “discovered” at Cracker Barrel, or the latest from the Oak Ridge Boys or … Smokey Robinson?
In addition, CB is also now trying its hand at Internet radio. It’s a smart move in an effort to “update” CB’s image, though they’re clearly targeting an older demo that wants actual CDs. Hopefully this move doesn’t Starbucks-ify the chain. I don’t ever want to have to hear Dave Koz while I’m eating.
