The greater Dallas-Fort Worth region is sizable and highly populated, so it stands to reason that some of us will make an ass of ourselves from time to time. Let’s be honest: it happens a lot, really. Not every instance of a North Texan making an ass of themself goes super-duper viral the way that the “crazy plane lady” Tiffany Gomas did in 2023 when she was infamously caught on video crying out “that motherfucker back there is not real” before a flight tried to depart, but in the TikTok era, it doesnt’t take long for an idiot to find themselves at the center of internet fury.
A 58-year-old woman from Flower Mound is the most recent local jerk caught on video. Last week, a DoorDash driver, reportedly named Cris Scandel, posted a video to Instagram showing an angry white woman shouting at her, accusing her of being “an illegal” and demanding that Scandela leave the Flower Mound street on which she was parked. Shortly after, popular social media personality Michael McWhorter, the man behind the popular social justice channels named TizzyEnt, pointed his many millions of followers to the video, giving the incoherent invective of the so-called “Flower Mound Karen” a massive spotlight and a great deal more scrutiny.
At one point, the “Karen” shouted at Scandela, who was recording the encounter, to “go speak your language back in Mexico.”
Not surprisingly, the video became a big deal here at home and well beyond. Even that bastion of serious, hard-hitting, mountain-moving journalism from London, The Daily Mail, picked up the story, calling, accurately, in our estimation, the screaming woman a “bulging-eyed Texas ‘Karen.’”
Several outlets, including KERA have reported that the woman’s daughter has posted an apology to social media, saying, “I am completely and utterly embarrassed and saddened by my mother’s actions and do not condone or support this kind of behavior at all.” The daughter apparently added that she has experienced this sort of behavior from her mother toward her “Hispanic boyfriend.”
Of course, because this is the internet, and because accounts like TizzyEnt often post with the stated intention of “finding” the perpetrator, the wrong people are often outed online. In its report, KERA notes that a Tennessee woman with the same name as the Flower Mound Karen has been receiving hateful messages and death threats online for several days.
So far, Scandela has not filed charges, and no further verified information regarding Flower Mound Karen or an apology has been released.
Alvord Teacher Embarrasses North Texas
While we’re at it, a teacher in Alvord, in Wise County, just northwest of Denton, has apologized for reportedly feeding an “ailing kitten” to a snake in the classroom before kids arrived and then telling the kids about the ghoulish task once they were in their seats. Earlier accounts suggested the teacher, who has not been named by the Alvord ISD, had fed the kitten to the snake in front of the children, but the district said in a statement that was not the case. If that wasn’t bad enough, the teacher allowed a student to take a trio of sick kittens home with them without parental consent, where the kittens apparently died.
Of course, a story like this is bound to attract eyes beyond North Texas. People magazine and the New York Post have already run with the story, making sure readers from across the country finally learn that Alvord exists, but for all the wrong reasons.
