We're in the heart of summer, with National Ice Cream Day right around the corner on Sunday, July 20. Yelp is helping us all celebrate by releasing its list of the Top 100 Ice Cream Shops.

The ice cream shops chosen are the highest-rated on Yelp, and they whip up unique, small-batch and artisan-crafted flavors. Sorry, no Baskin-Robbins or DQ blizzards on this list.

Gourmet ice cream sandwiches, gelato, new flavors like ube and plant-based ice cream shops are all recognized on this list, so everyone's type of vice gets some spotlight, cone or no.

Four shops in Dallas made the list: Botolino Gelato Artigianale, Sugar Pine Creamery, Churn and Bake Ice Cream and Sweet Firefly. If you need more ideas, all of these are on our list of Best Ice Cream Shops in Dallas.

No. 14 Botolino Gelato Artigianale

2116 Greenville Ave., 269 N Bishop Ave. & 5959 Royal Lane
Once you go gelato, you cannot go back to ice cream. Or maybe it's after you have gelato from Botolino Gelato Artigianale. The owner, Carlo “Botolo” Gattini, immigrated to Dallas with his grandma when he was 15. He prides himself on continuing the Italian tradition of gelato making. He serves seasonal and rotational flavors year-round, depending on what's in season. He has a black sesame and a hojicha flavored gelato right now, but you shouldn't leave without trying the affogato.

Sugar Pine Creamery

No. 36 Sugar Pine Creamery

6832 Coit Road (Plano)
Finding good soft serve in Dallas was a needle-in-a-haystack type of search — useless and disappointing — until Sugar Pine Creamery came along. Its specialty is the six different flavors served (two are always dairy-free), which rotate every two weeks. New flavors could be old favorites or new creations to challenge your taste buds. At the time of writing this, they offer strawberry lemonade (DF), peach mango oolong (DF), Blue Moon, banana Biscoff, pistachio and chili chocolate.

No. 53 Churn And Bake Ice Cream

2707 W. 15th St. (Plano)
Churn and Bake is an Asian-owned artisan ice cream shop where every unique flavor is churned in-house. Flavors like salted egg yolk, Korean sweet corn and lychee sorbet are just a few served that you won't be able to find anywhere else in the area. They rotate flavors often, so when you see something interesting, stop in to try it because it won't be there for long.

No. 81 Sweet Firefly

2701 Custer Parkway (Richardson)
Sweet Firefly could easily be this list's most overlooked ice cream shop. It's tucked away in a residential zone in Richardson. An obvious choice for those in the area, but perhaps a hidden gem for those of us below 635. The flavors churned here are both staples and creative ideas. Every month, a new roster of flavors is featured. In the past, we've seen cherry Coke, rocky road and red velvet. People also love their dairy and gluten-free flavors.

Seven more ice cream shops in Texas made the Top 100: Manolis Ice Cream, Pops, Sorbet & More in Austin came in at No. 4; Freshest Ice Creams in San Antonio made No. 15; Cool Cow Creamery in Kemah made No. 19; Rollie Rolls Ice Cream in Pflugerville made No. 23; Gelato Paradiso in Austin made No. 30; The Latest Scoop in San Angelo made No. 39 and Orobianco Italian Creamery in Blanco made No. 62.

Novel Ice Cream in Phoenix, Arizona, took the No. 1 spot, Let's Chill Homemade Ice Cream in Coral Springs, Florida, took second, and Ben Scoops in Carson, California, took third.
